MEET OUR PAST INTERNS

With a passion for the great outdoors and the ocean Yaesh joined Water Solutions in 2021 after his A levels. Yaesh was quickly seen as an individual with lots of creativity when it comes to building and designing. His unique designs have helped us improve various aspects of different processes for field surveys. 

Yaesh is a keen PADI advanced diver and has logged over 20 dives during his internship. Yaesh has explored various hot spots during two different expeditions to South Male atoll and South Ari atoll. Yaesh hopes to become a divemaster in the future and explore more parts of the maldives

The internship at Water Solutions inspired Yaesh to study BEng (Hons) Civil and Coastal Engineering at Plymouth University, UK. During his Undergraduate degree Yaesh hopes to develop creative ways to protect the coastlines of small islands and learn more about coastal processes.

My internship has helped me understand the importance of coastal modelling using scientifically derived data and understanding these processes”

Mohamed Yaesh

Mahil joined Water Solutions as an intern after completing his A levels in CHSE in 2021 with a keen interest in outdoors and traveling.During his internship Mahil got involved in various works at water solutions including offshore and land surveying along with marine and environmental surveys. Mahil developed an interest in environmental science and surveying as his internship went on. 

Mahil loves playing numerous sports including football and basketball and helped organize different sporting events for Water Solutions during his internship. The internship at Water solutions played a vital role in Mahils decision to take on BSc (Hons) Ocean Science and Marine Conservation at Plymouth University, UK. 

Mahil worked passionately with every project that he was assigned to and became an office favorite for field surveys.He hopes to learn more about conservation methods that could help us protect our unique environment during his time and university

Mahil Niyaz

Holly is a Marine Science graduate from James Cook university in Townsville Australia. She came to Water Solutions with a keen interest in small island mapping, as she comes from a small island in the south of Australia. She has a keen interest in geomorphology and the social aspect of environmental science. 

Holly enjoys documenting the underwater world through pictures and instagram reels. She loves a good dive and enjoys surfing and doing just about anything in the ocean. 

Holly contributed to the Noo Raajje project by helping digitize EIA reports using GIS for the coast characterization. This directly ties in with her honors research project with James Cook University. Holly also joined our teams on various field expeditions collecting environmental and marine data.

Holly Muecke

Mina is originally from landlocked Colorado in the United States, and is a recent bachelor of marine science graduate from James Cook University. Mina is interested in coastal processes and numerical modeling regarding climate change.

Mina is a divemaster and loves spending time outdoors and underwater. She enjoys mountaineering, camping, and exploring new places as she travels.   

Mina worked on numerical modeling using Mike 21 and helped gather the data required to run the models including Bathymetry data using singlebeam and Multibeam echo sounders onboard WS Moresby.

Mina Hatamaya

Kelsey is currently in her final semester of Bachelor of Science at James Cook University, majoring in Zoology and Ecology. Kelsey completed an internship at Water Solutions as her placement subject for her degree. Kelsey works on spatial ecology and modeling species responses to changes in climate as well as remote sensing for land use and land cover change in protected areas. 

Kelsey enjoys surfing, diving, and trail running as well as bird watching. She loves spending time outdoors and exploring new places. Kelsey loves a good weekend camping trip spent looking for wildlife. 

During her internship, generated a deep learning model for the automatic detection of palm trees from UAV imagery. She also helped develop materials to train communities in how to monitor conservation areas, in 6 islands of Noonu Atoll, Maldives. During her internship she also completed her divemaster course.

Kelsey Griffith

Internship from March, 2021

Akif is currently a student in University of Plymouth in his 2nd year of studying BSc (Hons) Marine Biology with Coastal Ecology. During the Covid 19 Pandemic Akif took a gap year and started an internship with water solutions mostly working with out environment and marine biology teams.

Akif worked actively in the greater Male waste to energy project leading a data collection survey from different households on online GIS platforms.

Mahil Joined water solutions after finishing his A levels with an open mind and a passion for outdoor work to explore a new industry.

His time spent with our surveying and environment team guided him to a carrier in civil and coastal engineering. During his internship Mahil was able to become familiar with coastal numerical modelling and contributed to 3 ongoing coastal protection projects in different resorts. He found a new passion in under water diving and photography during his internship.

Mahil is an active member of our NGO Small Island Geographic Society (SIGS) and played an active role in making the Smart Farming project by SIGS a successful one.

Yoosuf joined Water Solutions to explore his interest in the ocean, and to get an idea of what he wants to pursue as a career.

The internship helped broaden his viewpoint about what he wants to do as a job, and it helped narrow down what he wants to do.

His internship at Water Solutions further enhanced his interests, and Yoosuf is now planning to pursue Maritime Engineering and Commercial Diving as a career.

“I discovered a new found passion for marine engineering, technical diving, and marine sciences. Water solutions helped me grow as a person and become more confident in reaching my goals”

Internship from the January, 2020,

Azeen joined Water Solutions to find out what he wanted to do for his career.

He is interested in ocean exploration, and the internship at Water Solutions has helped him find what he want to pursue as a career, giving him a new, more specific interest in ocean mapping.

With a more focused plan in mind, Azeen intends on studying Oceanography, and to do hydrographic surveying as a career

Azeen Amjad Musthafa

Juma joined water solutions internship program in September 2019 with a key interest and passion for earth sciences. During her time as an intern, she was able to decide what she wanted to do for her future career. She became more confident about her interest in geography and her choice to enter the industry.

Working alongside experienced environmental consultants, Juma gained valuable knowledge and life skills needed for her future endeavours. Juma is now working at water solutions as a junior environmental analyst. Her scope involves working on various EIA monitoring and marine surveying projects.

Juma played a key role in leading the data collection and processing for greater Male waste project, she completed this project on time successfully.

Juma Ahmed

Lajy is an energetic character who joined water solutions internship program in June 2019. During his internship his main focus was working on the ground water resource management and aquifer project by the ministry of environment. A team of 12 surveys and consultants travelled to over 12 islands in the span of 3 months carrying out data collection alongside experts from Srilankan hydrology company LHI. Lajy gained valuable experience by leading a team of 4 members carrying out seismic surveys.

Lajy enjoys outdoor work and has a passion for football and hopes to become a professional football player for the Maldives national team one day.

Lajy Shah

During the final year of his undergraduate degree Faiz came to water solutions as an intern with a passion for environmental conservation and research.

His role as a junior consultant took him to various parts of Maldives carrying out field surveys and gaining experience. During his time at water solutions Faiz worked towards improving the quality of EIA reports and contributed to the growing environmental team at water solutions.

Faiz completed his master’s degree in Australia with a fully funded scholarship by Australian Awards in the field of environmental management.

Ibrahim Faiz

Affan joined water solutions in 2013 as an intern after completing his A levels. During his year as an intern he worked in over 20 projects and was involved in land surveying and participated in field surveys for environmental monitoring projects.

During his internship Affan shared his experiences and the work he did with the public by creating social media platforms for Water Solutions including Twitter and Instagram.

His internship at Water Solutions played a vital role in his decision to start working towards a career in offshore surveying.

Affan started his undergraduate degree in BSc (Hons) Ocean Exploration in 2014 after his internship and completed his degree in 2017. Upon returning he started working in Water Solutions as an offshore surveyor.

Mohamed Affan Shakir

Irsham Joined Water Solutions in 2016 as an intern. Irsham is a talented indiviual and great graphics designer, and worked with the water solutions surveying team on multiple projects across Maldives.

Irsham played a key role in designing and successfully publishing the second edition of Maps of Maldives 2016 version, a complete guide to the atolls and islands of Maldives. Irasham is well versed in GIS and helped publish final maps for the book. He also designed the brocure for water solutions that included illustrations for our capabilities.

Irsham completed his undergraduate degree in Mechatronics and is currrently working with State electric company limited (STELCO) as an engineer. Even today Irsham continues to help Water Solutions with design projects and data digitising.
